Understanding Self-Medication: Drugs, Alcohol, and Mental Health

Schools have a key role to play in ensuring that young people understand the risks involved and have the confidence, knowledge and skills to avoid them. They have a major contribution to make in discouraging drug misuse, encouraging positive attitudes and self-esteem, and promoting healthy lifestyles. Schools alone cannot, of course, solve the problem of drug misuse in society, but the implementation of an effective programme of drug education in all schools is an essential step in tackling it.

Even if this doesn’t happen, there are serious long term health implications. This includes inhalation of substances such as glue or gas from items such as aerosol canisters, cigarette lighters, plastic bags or tins. They are often sold as research chemicals, collector’s item, bath salts or plant food to get around the law. The most severe penalties relate to dealing or possessing Class A drugs.

Tell them they can come to you whenever they have questions about drugs and you will answer. If a young child brings up the subject, ask gently what they know about drugs. Children who can talk to their parents about drugs will avoid taking them more than those who do not. Naloxone can be accessed through your local drug service or pharmacy. Keep all drugs, medicines and other potentially hazardous substances out of sight and out of reach of children and animals. Prescribing of psychoactive medications should be informed by good quality guidance.

Quarterly and annual monitoring on the number of take-home naloxone kits provided in Scotland is published by Public Health Scotland. Police Scotland completed their naloxone roll out in 2023 with more than 12,500 police officers routinely carrying naloxone. Naloxone drugs kits have been made available in every community pharmacy across the country for use in an emergency. Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) available over the counter to relieve mild-moderate pain.

Over the past years it has become clear that some prescribed dependence forming medications are not the safe and effective treatment options as was originally thought. Furthermore, there is now a better appreciation of the risks, including dependence and in some cases mortality. Carrying controlled drugs is illegal and you can be charged even if you did not know what you had was a controlled drug or if the drugs are yours or not.

The drugs are listed in alphabetical order by pharmacy (generic) name and brand name. It should also be recognised that levels of drug use are relatively low, and the use of some drugs such as heroin are particularly rare and only have a small number of users. The range of variability for these drugs will be quite large because of sampling variability so figures will be liable to fluctuation from year to year. The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) is recognised as a good measure of drug use for the drug types and population it covers. However, it does not provide as good coverage of problematic drug use, as such users may not be a part of the household resident population that is covered by the survey.

Offences relating to temporary class drugs will have punishment levels similar to Class B drugs. It is also an offence to supply or produce psychoactive substances like laughing gas. Possession of a psychoactive substance in a custodial institution such as a prison is also illegal. The legal restrictions in the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 aim to control the use and distribution of dangerous and harmful drugs.

The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 classifies controlled drugs into three categories (Classes A, B and C), according to the harm that they cause, with Class A drugs considered to be the most harmful. Each of the UK governments, relevant health departments and local authorities should establish, adequately resourced specialist support services for prescribed drug dependence. What makes the difference is not just entering treatment but knowing you have a team who will stand with you long after the first step has been taken. When broken down further, younger adults between 16 and 24 are significantly more likely to use drugs than older groups, with usage more than double the rate of those aged 25 to 59.
